Kamenoko takemoto anna1/12/2023 ![]() She watched her brother suffer and struggle under her father's rage, and when it got so unbearable that he ended up burning out and dropping out of university after his first year all that rage and aggression was shifted to her, with interest. ![]() Unable to say anything at work, he brought his frustrations home, taking it out on his family and especially Masa's older brother. At home, despite already having been at his new company for several years, her father was still in an incredibly low-ranking position, his status as a Zainichi Korean making his superiors look down on him and giving him the greatest workload with the least reward. Masa began to hate her name, hate school, but she was quickly losing places to turn to for sanctuary. "Say sorry! It's your name, isn't it? Apologise, you zit-faced Korean!" "Sori, say sorry!" they would trill as they shoved her into walls and stepped on the books she dropped. The onset of puberty gave her an unfortunate case of acne in addition to the freckles she was born with and it only added to her tormentors' glee as they constantly picked on her name. As the years passed, the teasing only grew until it turned into full-scale bullying. She bore with it because words were just words, right? It had to end eventually.īut it didn't. Slowly, she began to make friends, though the teasing continued. It was only at home and, later, at a community soccer club, that she was able to be her usual self. Completely unused to this new treatment, she began to seclude herself at school. Already a bit of an outcast from being the new girl, Masa quickly became the target of some particularly acid-tongued classmates, constantly picked on for her "odd" name. Suddenly, she was no longer among the people she'd grown up with, thrust into an entirely new environment with unfamiliar faces and unkind eyes. The company her father worked at failed and the family moved so he could take up a position at another company. However, as she began elementary school, this idyllic image began to change. Her earliest memories were of happy times, with an affectionate older brother and parents who loved her if not spoiled her. Growing up in a family of four, Masa was the second child born to a pair of second-generation Korean-Japanese. While she's rather cold and reluctant about helping strangers, there is no limit to how far she will go for a friend. However, she won't hesitate to spoil someone she cares about. She respects the rules and authority but at the same time, hates being told what to do by people she deems "incompetent", the criteria for which is very subjective.ĭespite her family never having been poor, she is extremely frugal, her parents' constant monitoring of her wallet forcing her to hide her money and carefully ration it out. She wants to be able to support herself and her brother's dreams without ever having to depend on her parents ever again. Absolutely terrified of failure and the prospect of losing control, everything she does must have a plan B, C, and D, with various other scenarios factored in. ![]() Masa is paranoid and somewhat of a control freak, taking all necessary precautions to ensure that what she wants to remain private, does so. She is not one to pick fights, and will often even just walk away from an argument because she rarely finds the opposing party worthy of her time unless the issue at hand involves one of her friends, in which case she won't hesitate to punch someone's lights out. She has incredibly high levels of tolerance for bullshit but be the one to cross that line and nothing you do will ever redeem you in her eyes. She is slow to trust and should someone mistreat her or someone she cares about she will no longer want anything to do with that person to the extent that even seeing their name or face will be enough to ruin her mood for the entire day. She has a difficult time making friends but when she does, loyalty is crucial and number one and she will stop whatever she's doing at the drop of a hat to support them, which often causes trouble for herself later on. There is nothing she despises more than seeing people being mistreated, and she has negative levels of respect for people who take out their troubles on those who don't deserve it. Years of bullying at the hands of both schoolmates and her parents has imbued in Masa a strong sense of justice. ![]()
